In ancient age the area around Cesenatico was a wide brackish and swampy lagoon; the Romans founded the city and inhabited permanently the area at the end of the 3rd century before Christ, when the zone between Cesenatico and Cesena assumed the aspect, that has even now, of a agricultural territory.
Cesenatico is an ancient port, that lived thanks to the fishermen and the commerce; in fact, still today the place where the spirit of the city lives is the porto-canale (port-channel), built in 1500 on original plan by Leonardo da Vinci. According to the intentions Leonardo, this channel would have had to reach the city of Cesena, situated approximately 15 km from Cesenatico. Today it is the place where land the fishing boats and where there are the characteristic restaurants, famous for their fish dishes. In the port channel is located the Museo della Marineria (museum of the navy), an only collection of ancient boats.
The port-channel represents the historical zone, while the Skyscraper of Cesenatico, built in 1950 on the seaside, in the new zone of the city, is the symbol of the modern and touristic Cesenatico. The new part of the city, that developed around Viale Carducci, parallel to the sea, has been dedicated almost entire to the tourism, with Hotels, stores, restaurants, bar and pubs. And, obviously, the beautiful beach, the limpid sea and the pine wood.
